Time, Change and Art... some jumbled thoughts!
- Old v. New
- Then v. Now
- Analog v. Digital
A reflection of light caught on an actual piece of film paper, versus light converted into 1s and 0s and stored in a data file.
The article 'What is Digital Photography?' was a very interesting read that brought many important issues into focus regarding the “photographic art.”
The invention of a “charge coupled device” (CCD) that converts light into a file containing a set of numbers, revolutionized the world of photography. From big bulky cameras that required a change of film for every shot to ultra-sleek digital cameras the size of credit cards with capacity to store hundreds of pictures. The changing times have affected everything around us and for better or for worse, “photographic art” has become more accessible to all.
I was fascinated by the responses of many of my classmates that pointed out the technical and artistic differences between digital and film photography. From creation to distribution and everything in between, the expansion of possibilities within this art form have been transformed for ever by technology.
Digital cameras are now part of the gadget-centric-lifestyle of many people. The expansion of technology seems endless and technology is deemed to outlive all of us but will it?
Everything in this world has a price. Time will reveal the longer lasting effects of this rapid technological change and as I delve deeper into this art cognizant of the various issues surrounding it, I am excited to learn about the challenges ahead.
